Analytical Mechanics, 5p

I have been giving this course from 1999 to 2007, but from the academic year 2007/2008 and onwards, the course will be given by Ingemar Bengtsson. The information below is kept here for those interested in old/alternative material.

Course description

The course deals with Lagrange and Hamilton formalism, particle mechanics, generalized coordinates, variational principles, Lagrange's, Hamilton's and Hamilton-Jacobi's equations, canonical transformations, Poisson brackets, symmetries and conservation laws, small oscillations, rigid body mechanics, the inertia tensor and Euler's dynamical equations.

Course plan

The course is given as 16 lectures, 5 problem solving sessions and 5 hand-in exercises. The hand-in exercies are not compulsory, but if you pass on them, they give you one problem for free on the written exam at the end of the course. Just before the exam, a question/problem solving session is scheduled.

Below is the course plan:

Problem solving sessions

On the problem solving sessions, problems from the book will mostly be used. Teacher on the problem solving sessions is Sara Rydbeck.

Extra material

Hand-in exercises

The hand-in exercises are not compulsory, but if you pass on them, you get one problem (out of 5) for free on the final written exam. Each problem gives a maximum of 5 points and if you get at least 15 out of the total of 25 points, you will pass on the hand-in exercises. Each hand-in exercise should be self-evaluated according to the self-evaulation form (appendix to the course plan).

Problem Deadline for submission
1 Thursday February 1
2 Thursday February 8
3 Thursday February 15
4 Thursday February 22
5 Tuesday March 13

The problems can be handed either to Joakim Edsjö or Sara on a lecture/problem solving sessions or be put in the mailbox of Joakim Edsjö on AlbaNova.

If you want to know if you have passed on the hand-in exercises, either ask me, or check out the list that will be posted outside the course expedition after the last hand-in exercise.

Summary of the course

Below is a short summary of the course meant as a short repetition after the course.

Old exams

Some of the old exams exist both in an English and a Swedish version, whereas some only exist in a Swedish version.

Course evaluations

I have been responsible for this course since 1999. Below you will find the course evaluations of the course since then (in Swedish)
