Research
I am a particle physicist
currently working on the ATLAS
experiment. My main research interests concern investigations into the strong
force and searches for new physics processes.
At ATLAS I am working
on the development of algorithms to calibrate the hadronic
calorimeter, the TileCal. I am also studying the discovery potential of
the ATLAS detector to the production of R-hadrons and other stable massive
particles.
I was previously on
the H1 experiment
at electron-proton collider HERA. My research largely focused on experimental
tests of perturbative and non-perturbative
QCD, and searches for hitherto unseen particles and
physics processes such as Dirac Monopoles and QCD instantons.
As part of
the LCFI
collaboration, I was responsible for the establishment of a test set-up to
measure the low temperature radiation hardness of fast CCDs,
to be used as technology for a vertex detector at a future linear collider.

and seminars.

publications with Spires.
Outreach
I had my brief moment of fame and fortune as the subject of a BBC documentary on a
search I made for Dirac Monopoles. Apparently, over one million folk have seen
it, although only my wife and my mother admit to having watched it.
Nevertheless, it won me this.
I have
given a number of presentations on high energy physics to high schools in the UK and Sweden. Should any web-surfing
teacher want such a talk (in English or Swedish) please let me know. I
have also organised master classes for bright British students, and have
delivered a number of talks at mainstream Particle Physics Master Classes in
the UK and Stockholm.
Some recent talks for school students and the general public can be
found here.
Together
with Erik Johansson at SU and
collaborators at LBL, I’m writing scripts for animations of the
construction and exploitation of the ATLAS detector. These are well worth a
look.
